Ozone therapy
Local ozone injection is offered for some joint and disc-related pain, but the evidence for it is limited and it is not recommended in major international guidelines for back pain or osteoarthritis. We offer it only after better-supported treatments have been tried, only alongside exercise therapy, and only after telling you where the evidence stands.
What it is, and where the evidence actually stands
Medical ozone is an oxygen-ozone mixture injected into tissue — most often paravertebrally or into a joint — on the proposition that it has anti-inflammatory and oxygenating effects. It is offered widely for disc herniation and osteoarthritis.
The evidence is limited. Studies for lumbar disc herniation are mostly small, frequently uncontrolled, and produce inconsistent results. It is not recommended in major international guidelines for back pain or osteoarthritis 12. In the United States, federal regulations describe ozone as a toxic gas with no known useful medical application 3.
What we tell patients before they decide
That the evidence is weak, that better-supported options exist and should be tried first, and that a treatment being available and widely marketed is not evidence that it works.
We say this plainly because ozone therapy is heavily promoted in health tourism and patients frequently arrive having been told it is a standard treatment for disc herniation. It is not.
What we recommend instead, and first
For disc herniation with radicular pain: structured rehabilitation, activity modification and appropriate pain management, with surgical opinion where there is progressive neurological deficit. For knee osteoarthritis: progressive exercise and weight management, which have the strongest evidence of anything available.
If you have completed those and want to discuss ozone as an additional option, we will have that conversation honestly, including what the realistic chance of benefit is.
Safety
Ozone must never be administered by direct inhalation — it is toxic to the lungs 3. Injection carries the risks of any injection: infection, bleeding and nerve injury, with additional reported risks including embolism in intravascular administration. Deaths have been reported from gas embolism when ozone entered the bloodstream — during autohaemotherapy, in which ozonated blood is returned into a vein, and probably through a vein punctured during a disc injection 78. A fatal bloodstream infection has also been described after ozone treatment for a lumbar disc herniation 9.
It is contraindicated in G6PD deficiency, pregnancy, uncontrolled hyperthyroidism and bleeding disorders.
Why we publish this page at all
It is offered in Türkiye widely and asked about often, and a page that simply omitted it would leave people to find the claims elsewhere without the counterweight.
So the page exists to state what the evidence supports, what it does not, and what we would recommend first — which is not the usual reason a clinic writes about a treatment it provides.
What we will not do
Administer it by inhalation, which is toxic to the lungs and can cause pulmonary oedema 3. Present it as a treatment for cancer, autoimmune disease, infection or as a general immune therapy — claims that appear in this field and are not supported.
Offer it before a genuine course of exercise-based treatment, or as an alternative to a surgical opinion where one is needed.
If people say it helped them, why is the evidence called weak?
Because sciatica from a disc herniation often settles on its own, and the herniation itself often shrinks. In a 2023 meta-analysis of repeat scans in people treated without surgery, 70.4% of extruded herniations and 93.0% of sequestered ones regressed, and regression went together with improving symptoms 4. Anyone treated during that time may improve, whatever the treatment was.
Only trials with a comparison group can separate the effect of ozone from that natural recovery. A review of 15 randomised trials in low back pain and disc herniation found that none reached a good-quality standard and most were flawed by relevant bias 5. A good personal experience is real, but it cannot show that the injection caused it.

Conditions this is used for
The 2 conditions where this method is part of a routine programme, grouped by area. It is never the whole plan on its own.
Methods are combined inside a programme and chosen after examination — they are not booked separately.
Your path to this treatment
Nothing here is booked from a page. You send the records you have, a rehabilitation physician reads them, and you get a written answer — including when the answer is that an intensive programme will not help.
4 steps, start to finish
1.Send your records
A discharge summary from the hospital that treated the original event, and any imaging of the affected area — CT, MRI or X-ray.2.A written plan in 48 hours
A rehabilitation physician reviews the case and returns the expected duration, the recommended programme and the centre. Free, no obligation.3.Travel and admission
Where a visa is needed we issue an invitation letter and treatment confirmation naming the dates and the facility. You are met at the airport and driven to the centre by private vehicle or ambulance; a bed for one companion and interpreting during therapy are arranged.4.Treatment, then home
The programme runs, then you leave with a discharge report and a written home exercise plan. Your return journey is organised before you go, with scheduled video reviews so progress does not stop.

What patients say after a programme
Short videos filmed during therapy: a child’s rehabilitation after a brain tumour, suspended gait training after spinal cord injury, and learning to walk again after a fall. Individual results vary.

Questions people actually ask
About this treatment
Does ozone therapy work?
For lumbar disc-related pain the evidence is the strongest it has, and it is still limited. For knee osteoarthritis reviews are mixed and of low methodological quality 6. Outside these, the evidence is weak.
Is it safe?
When injected by trained clinicians, reported adverse events are mostly minor. Inhalation is genuinely dangerous and is never appropriate.
Who should not have it?
G6PD deficiency, pregnancy, uncontrolled hyperthyroidism and bleeding disorders are contraindications.
Should I try this before surgery?
For a disc problem it is one option among several to discuss, and it does not replace a surgical opinion where warning signs are present.
Why do you recommend exercise first?
Because for the conditions ozone is usually proposed for, exercise has substantially better evidence, no procedural risk and a lasting effect.
